Is KAMRA Right For Me?

08 Jan 2013

KAMRA is a clever procedure that will help Presbyopia sufferers to be free of their corrective eyewear, and it’s available exclusively at Optilase.

Presbyopia is the change in vision brought about by the ageing process, as the natural lens of the eye stiffens and becomes inflexible with age. This hardening of the lens makes focusing on near objects difficult, as the retina no longer receives light rays at the right spot to form a clear image, making close objects blurry.

What is the KAMRA inlay?

The KAMRA inlay is a tiny ring that is implanted on top of the cornea of your eye. It has an opening in the centre and thousands of laser-etched micro-openings to let fluids pass in and out naturally to keep your eye healthy.

How does the inlay work?

The KAMRA inlay restores the ability of the eye to focus light. It works like the zoom feature on a camera, taking the light coming into the eye and focusing it onto the retina at the back of the eye to form a clear, blur-free image.

What benefits can I expect?

You can expect improved clarity of vision for close work and everyday activities like reading papers, texts, computer screens, labels, menus and so on.

Will my distance vision change?

No; the inlay is designed to bring back your near vision while maintaining your distance vision with any compromise.

What can I expect during the surgery?

You’ll have numbing drops put onto your eyes first to make sure you’re totally comfortable, and then your surgeon will use a laser to make a microscopic opening on the cornea of your eye and slip in the inlay. The whole procedure only takes about 15 minutes.

What can I expect afterwards?

Your eyes might be slightly irritated and you‘ll be light sensitive for 48 hours or so after surgery. You won’t need any bandages; but you’ll get eye drops to use regularly as your natural tear film will take a while to settle down again.

How long until I notice an improvement?

Recovery time varies quite a lot from patient to patient; from a few days to a few weeks or even months. It depends on how you heal. You can resume normal activities within 24 hours of surgery. You may still need your reading glasses if you’re working in dim light, or concentrating on a close task for a prolonged period, but the inlay will reduce your dependency significantly.
