The perils of old age may be too long to list, but one all-too common side effect of growing old is developing presbyopia, which is an eye condition that literally means ‘old eye’.
Presbyopia can appear in adults any age after 40, although sometimes early-onset presbyopia can present even earlier.
Affecting near vision, presbyopia is attributed to the loss of accommodation or focusing power by the crystalline lens.
Controlled by the ciliary muscles, the lens is extremely important when it comes to near vision as it requires a greater amount of accommodation than distance vision.
These ciliary muscles contract or relax depending on the type of vision required, but with age they gradually weaken, while the lens hardens and becomes less flexible.
When these biological changes occur near vision appears blurred, and corrective lenses or reading glasses may be needed in order to see clearly.

The KAMRA Reading Vision Solution at Optilase is a simple procedure that uses an intra-corneal inlay that works similar to a camera aperture.
Unlike Laser Eye Surgery, no corneal tissue is removed to treat presbyopia. Instead, a Femtosecond Laser is used to create a tiny corneal flap to allow for the KAMRA inlay to be implanted into the cornea.
The KAMRA inlay then sits in the cornea to filter incoming light to give presbyopic patients a greater depth of field and allow for restored near vision without compromising on distance vision.
Is the KAMRA Reading Vision Treatment safe?
The KAMRA inlay works much like a contact lens but without the need for ongoing care, changing prescription or the hassle of having to remove them.
A contact lens works by sitting in front of your cornea, while the KAMRA inlay is implanted at a depth of 0.2 mm in the cornea.
The inlay is ¼ the width of a human hair, weighs less than a grain of salt and has a 1.6mm centre opening to allow for near vision correction.
Furthermore, the inlay is manufactured using biocompatible materials and perforated with 8,400 microscopic holes to allow for nutrients, oxygen and water to flow unaffected through the cornea.
